A Hunter in a Westie Terrier

westies_with_the_swans1Have you ever wondered why a Westie terrier likes to dig and bark? The reason for this is that this adorable, compact pet that is commonly raised by their owners as lapdogs was originally bred to be a vermin hunter.

This hunter’s instinct of the Westie terrier was developed in mid-19th century when a Cairn terrier breeder had some white puppies in his litters. He eventually bred these pups for controlling rats, otter, fox and other vermin.

The same hunting instinct has also contributed in making the Westie a tough and brave dog despite its small stature. Nonetheless, with the proper training the Westie terrier remains as the lovable companion that most people now regard it to be.
