How Long Do West Highland White Terriers Or Westies Live

West Highland White Terriers

How long do Westies live? I was out for a stroll with my boy Jonathan and Pepper our Westie Dog by the sea shore where we live.  I met a neighbour called John who I hadn’t seen for ages. I was terribly stunned to see him on his very own because he has got a black Labrador and the two of them are inseparable. Naturally I enquired about Barney and his face dropped. I knew something was very wrong.

His response was he had to put Barney down as he had developed cancer and it had come on so speedily. He did not desire his friend to suffer. I revealed to John that I was so sorry. He knew that I meant it as all dog lovers do. After all it is the passing of one of your family.

Non dog owners can’t understand and I think that they are the losers of such love and faithfulness. The stories hurt Jonathan as he always would play with Barney and make such a fuss of him. It got me to thinking how long our westie Pepper would live to. The Westie usually should live to around fifteen years if probably looked after and also if no serious health issue arise.

He is now six years and I can’t believe he is that old. Perhaps it’s an indication of me getting old, because my kids appeared to have grown up in the blink of an eye. I give Pepper a huge cuddle when I got home and he got two additional treats also.

Do not want to take him for granted and will try and monitor his health checks. With the right grooming for the west highland terrier,  he looks like a small puppy again, each time he returns from the groomers. Have to also begin building up the westie photographs again. So for all westie and pet lovers, do not forget to give your pet  a hug today.

Just a note. Although the larger breeds don’t seem to live as long as the small breeds. It seems that Westies live between 12 to 15 years. Not long enough, but what can we do. Di is 5 this year and Max is 3. They have been the joy of our life as well as Dolly and Lady.

My Westie is about to turn 12. He is as spry as ever. He has slowed down just a little, but not much. I have two other, younger dogs, so they keep him active.

Many thanks for your valued post. I feel the same myself, and my sons came me active.

I have a Westie named Macduff who recently had a “Senior” check up and will be 10 in March. He has been in great health except for occasional ear infections. On his check up it was found he had bad knees which required a $1,000 or more operation. The vet said he also needs his teeth cleaned and he could do it all while he was put under. I also have two other small dogs that he runs and plays with. I do not want him to suffer and he doesnot seem to. I just cannot afford a huge vet bill. I have been worried since I took him. The reality of his age has set in. I waited so long to finally have a Westie and it seems like I have not had him long. Is bad knees a Westie trait? Is there something to do besides operate? I hope everyones Westie on this site is happy and healthy and lives a long time.
