Westies – Christmas Westie Memories with my Tramp

I found this on the Crazy About Westies form and it was such a lovely story for this time of year that I would like to share it with you

Oh I just love Christmas! This year is going to be a bittersweet one – my first with Toby the labbie pup but also my first for 15 years without Tramp.

Memories of Christmas with Tramp my West Highland Terrier

Tramp always seemed to be put out by the fuss which Christmas brought. When we put our tree up in the bay window, ‘his chair’ would be moved and he never liked it one bit! He would sit on that chair, resolutely, as if to say “You want to move it – you move it with me on it…humph!”

Putting pressies under the tree was always a risky business – Tramp never quite got the hang of the fact that chocolate was toxic and he would sniff out anything food based quite easily – all packages had to be carefully screened before we could leave them there, especially when he was a pup. hee hee! I remember, one Christmas when he was about 4 we wrapped up a rubber pull toy for the vicar’s spaniel Non and he sniffed it out from under all the other packages and unwrapped and hid it…little sod!

I used to be scared of Santa until I was about 7 so he was never allowed into the house any further than the hall. I used to leave a note on the door warning him that my doggy would be watching him…lol!

When I’d gone to bed Tramp used to have a treat – he got to drink rudolph’s milk and eat his carrot (he loved carrots) and then he’d come and curl up in his bed next to mine.

When morning came and the house was pierced with my childish squeals of glee when I saw a full stocking at the end of the bed I’d proceed to wake everyone up to come and watch me opening it. Tramp would be there, tail wagging, on my bed watching with interest at the wonders that appeared.

Whilst we all sat around the table having Christmas dinner, Tramp (duly donned with paper hat) would sit and watch with an expression that could melt hearts begging “give me food” until we finished and he was rewarded with his very own mini gravy dinner (he was a spoilt brat! ) and then in the afternoon he’d curl up happily on his chair or, when I was older, on my lap and we would just sit – girl and dog – enjoying a woofily good Christmas together.

Ahhh….If you managed to get through that – good for you! Sorry for much ranting. It’s only when I saw this section that it really made me think how many memories I have of christmas and how Tramp features in pretty much all of them! There are so many I could write a book! Oh well, heres hoping for many more Christmas memories with Toby.
