A Hunter in a Westie Terrier

westies_with_the_swans1Have you ever wondered why a Westie terrier likes to dig and bark? The reason for this is that this adorable, compact pet that is commonly raised by their owners as lapdogs was originally bred to be a vermin hunter.

This hunter’s instinct of the Westie terrier was developed in mid-19th century when a Cairn terrier breeder had some white puppies in his litters. He eventually bred these pups for controlling rats, otter, fox and other vermin.

The same hunting instinct has also contributed in making the Westie a tough and brave dog despite its small stature. Nonetheless, with the proper training the Westie terrier remains as the lovable companion that most people now regard it to be.

When Looking for a Westie Rescue

west highland terriers                                                                                                     A constantly misbehaving Western Highland White Terrier, despite its small size, could be a hazard to a household especially if there are children.

In this situation, the most logical solution would be to seek the help of a Westie rescue center or organization. The better pet rescue group to go to would be one that has trained volunteers helping pet owners relinquish their animal charges.

Some of these groups are pet-specific such as in Westie rescue centers in some states, and maintain their own websites in the pursuit of pet rescue and placement.

These groups can be reached easily by e-mail and can respond in 24 to 72 hours to requests for Westie rescue. They also maintain a list of pet foster homes which the groups have pre-inspected, pre-approved and vet-referenced.
