If you are considering purchase of a Westie pup, the best way to do it is to get references on West Highland Terrier breeders.
One good reference for a reputable breeder near you would be the West Highland White Terrier Club of America. Do not go to just any pet shop as you’ll have to carefully examine the Westie’s pedigree, its parents, for like any other dog, it can be a carrier of genetically transmitted disease.
You’ll immediately know the reputable West Highland Terrier breeders, for they’ll screen you as well as you screen the dog and its breeder.
If the breeder asks a lot of questions about you as a pet owner, this is a good sign that the person you’re dealing with is among the more responsible West Highland Terrier breeders.

If you live in a condo, townhouse or apartment and is considering a good pet, your best bet would be a West Highland Terrier.
This dog breed has two-inch all-white coat making it an adorable pet. It is compact in size and could make for an active indoor pet and make do without a yard.
However, you will need to take your West Highland Terrier for a daily walk for its exercise just like any other pet dog.
Walking a West Highland Terrier won’t be much of a problem as in general, this dog has a fairly pleasant disposition to strangers and is unlikely to challenge other dogs.
West Highland Dogs – or Westies make for good pets at home because of their generally pleasant disposition. These dogs are also relatively safe to keep even with children in the household, although it would be preferable to have them if the kids are not below eight years old.
In order to have a well-behaved pet dog, the owner must assert authority as “pack leader” on his/her animal companion. This is a principle which in particular should be applied to West Highland dogs.
Many pet owners treat Westies as lap dogs but this could create some animal behavioral problems. By allowing such pets, for instance, to jump on one’s lap, the West Highland dogs would be conditioned to thinking that they owns that space and are superior members of the pack than their owner.

West Highland white terrier lives an average of 15+ years, and usually has a litter of two to five puppies.
What is the history behind the West Highland White Terrier breed? This breed originated in Scotland developed in the high mountains of West Scotland, to hunt vermin. They claim a common ancestry to the Scotch Terrier.
References to the existence of the West Highland White Terrier can be seen as early as the 18th century, like one painting done by Sir Edwin Landseer. The piece entitled “The Breakfast Party” clearly features the West Highland Terriers.
Another name of the West Highland White Terrier, is as the Poltalloch terrier. The name refers to the home of Col. E.D. Malkolm, the first breeder of these breed. In 1907, the breed then registered as the Roseneath terrier, little Skye and Cairn. Then in 1909, AKC officially changed the breed’s name to what it is known as today, West Highland White Terrier breed.
In the past West Highland White Terriers, were considered to belong to the one breed, with Dandie Dinmont, Skye, Cairn and Scottish Terriers. However, although they share common ancestors, selective breeding resulted in the differences between their coat type and colors.
A surprising fact about this breed is, given that the West Highland White Terrier was originally bred to traipse the steep and rugged mountain sides, Westies are well adjusted to today’s living conditions. As long as they are walked several times a day, they are good apartment dwellers.
It’s not that hard to see then that the West Highland White Terrier definitely qualifies as one of man’s best friends.
