4) Members Question on Forum - Brushing Your Westie
Posted by dulcinea
JI wanted to know if anyone else had
problems with their pups when trying to brush them. Dulce is just about
6mos old, and whenever we try and brush her, she goes a little crazy.
We started off using a plastic dog
hair brush, that I bought because the company had a westie in the picture,
but she hated that, wouldn't even let it near her. Now we are trying a
slicker brush, which my dad seems to have been having some luck with,
cause there are little white fuzzy hairs in it. She still won't sit still
for more than about 2 mins though, and that is not enough time to
completely brush her, plus keep her occupied (with a toy, bone, or
treats).
We are trying to get her used to brushing by doing a little bit everyday,
but it is hard, because she is so fidgety and doesn't sit still. I don't
want to make her fat by giving her treats to keep her occupied, but that
seems to be the only thing that works.
Also, I read in the other posts that
bathing is usually only done once a month. Is that normal? Dulce has pink
skin, and seems to be really itchy. We have been bathing her once a week,
not just because she is getting dirty, but because of the constant
itching. Could the frequency of the baths be causing the itching?
--------------------------------------------------
Yes, bathing her too often will
aggravate her itchy skin because it strips the natural oils out of the
coat. Bathing should only be done when it is absolutely necessary.
Brushing is good, it is how I keep Max's coat in good condition. It
distributes the oils through the coat and stimulates the skin cells.
I don't like the slicker brushes.
Have you ever caught your finger with it by accident, it is painful so it
must also be for the dog. I use an all bristle brush and brush Max's coat
completely all over the 'wrong' way and then al over again the 'right'
way. This gets out all the dead and loose hair and give the skin a good
massage.
Max used to wriggle but you have to be very firm and leave the treat to
the end so the dog tolerates the brushing in anticipation of the treat.
Giving treats during the brushing distracts the dog momentarily but then
makes it wriggle around looking for more.
2 or 3 small brushing sessions a day
will work better for her than trying to get her to sit still for one long
brushing. If you do it every day, even when you don't feel like it, it
will become second nature to her and talk to her softly whilst you do it.
She will learn to love the attention from you.
Good luck
Alison

Daisy will be 4 years old tomorrow
(2nd Jan) and she still is not terribly keen on being brushed, but she
knows it is a morning ritual and puts up with it. First thing she gets
brushed and then she has her collar put on (she sleeps in the 'nude').
Her fur is quite long now, as it is
about 2 months since she was trimmed, but because of the daily brush, most
days she doesn't look too bad.
