Westie Rescue Believe it or not there are times that West Highland Terriers are in situations that require rescue. The good news is that there are places that do rescue Westies if necessary. There may be a Westie that needs rescuing because it has been abandoned, turned into a shelter or has been lost and not claimed. Sometimes families can not afford to take care of the dog or there may be a divorce situation or illness that requires a new home for the Westie. Owners of a Westie may need to relocate and are not able to take the family dog, a new baby may cause a Westie rescue situation or someone in the family may have allergies. Older owners sometimes need to move into a retirement home or the Westie is not getting along with the children in the family and has resorted to nipping or growling. These situations are sad for everyone involved but there is a group that helps make the transition a little easier. The National Westie Rescue group is made up of volunteers from rescue groups who operate independently throughout the country. The volunteers may be associated with the West Highland White Terrier Club of America, independent organizations that have been put together for the sole purpose of rescue work or they may represent a regional Westie Club. These groups help make the rescue of West Highland Terriers go smoothly and they find new homes for Westies who have been abused, neglected, lost, abandoned or surrendered. There are procedures and policies that are followed by each group but the services may vary depending on the resources available and the local environment. Some groups are able to offer foster care. Sometimes services depend on the resources each group has and may be limited in some areas. Groups that don’t have as many resources may operate mostly through “home to home” placements and referrals.
