Westie Puppy Training Problems

This was posted  on our busy Crazy About Westies Forum:

 ************************************************

Hi

I have a little puppy called Kelsie who is 12 weeks old now (you might remember her from a few weeks ago when I wrote for advice because she was very poorly and we nearly lost her).

Well, we are looking for good tips on how to train her. Her toilet training is going okay, she 90% of the time goes to the puppy pads, but sometimes misses and when we take her outside, she does the toilet there and sometimes goes to the back door to go out which is great. So the toilet training issue isnt at all bad. What we are having problems with is when we are eating she constantly jumps up at our legs, barks at us and generally is being really greedy.

She also has a tendancy to bite peoples hands. We know she is only playing and isnt being nasty, but sometimes it does nip a bit and we try to stop her without hitting her, but we have found that a little tap on the nose and firmly saying NO! does work, but we hear alot of people saying its wrong to hit your dog, Obviously we don’t hit her hard, just a little tap on the nose so she knows its wrong. Do you think this will work?

She is brilliant on the lead, sometimes she has a go of chewing it while shes walking, but i can cope with that, but whenever she goes out a walk, she wont do the toilet until she gets back into the house, quite frustrating.

Also, in the car she has a dog carrier which she likes after the first 15 mins but sometimes she just barks and barks at me and sometimes I am scared i will loose control of the car as she is sooo loud and peircing. How can i stop her from barking at me? Once she is settled in her carrier, you wouldnt even know she is there as she is good as gold, but she does sometimes go mad in it and tries to scrape her way out of it.

I have found that giving her a treat when we 1st go in the car, it makes her quiet for a while, but i dont want to keep giving her treats as she might learn that its a good thing to bark as she will get a treat and i dont want that.  Someone told me to scoosh her with a water scoosher when she barks at me, but yesterdat i soaked her soo much she looked like a drowned rat, and she still continued to bark. Naughty Girl!!!

Any tips on toilet training, how to stop biting, barking, jumping when were eating etc would be great. We know she’s only a baby, so were not expecting miracles. Hope to hear from you soon as your advice is always great and appreciated

Sharon and Kelsie xxx

Westie Digging Up My Plants -Help!!!

This was posted on our busy Crazy About Westies Forum:

Help, I am having a problem with my little angel Dudley. He seems to enjoy digging up my flowers especially my herbs, we have tried moving them out of his reach and he will do whatever it takes to climb and reach my planters.

He has even resorted to digging up the roots of my sweet bay leaf tree. I don’t know what else to do to correct him, and at this time I also have Duncan with a sprain hind paw. I think we are all just falling apart with this little energy bunny Dudley.

Help!!!!

Westie Dog - Yellow Bile and Very Sick

This was posted  on our busy Crazy About Westies Forum:

 ************************************************

I had to take Jimmie to the vet this morning. He was a bit off-colour yesterday and I noticed that he had vomited in his bed overnight so I washed his bed and thought I would keep an eye on him thinking he might just have overeaten. However, this morning he went outside and was heaving and shaking and bringing up lots and lots of bright yellow bile. He then stood in the corner hanging his head and I knew he must feel awfully nauseous.

He did not even want to see food and he normally barks at me to hurry up and does cart wheels before he eats He eventually came inside but hid under the table - he must think his feeling sick is being punished for something  I rang vet and made appoinment and she examined him straight away.

She said the top of his stomach and where pancreas and liver is obviously very sore as he flinched when she tried to examine him there. His temperature was normal and he had normal toileting. I had to leave him there as she wants to take blood test and also an x-ray to see if anything is amiss.I don't like to put him through this but I would never forgive myself if there was some underlying cause and I was delaying his early treatment. When I got home Molly went crazy looking for him. She ran everywhere sniffing his scent and trying to find him We already miss him so much and hope his going to be okay.

West Highland Terrier Forum - Important Points To Consider

Westie forum and pictures - Important points that you must consider before joining a Westie forum and gallery with Pictures. You must take thesse on board so as to get the greatest benefits of the westie comunity....

1) Make sure that the forum is an active forum before considering joining. An active forum shows that there are interesting topics that westie members return to on a regular basis. To actually go and post takes time and this is a positive recommendation for any forum in today's hectic lifestyle.

2) Above all read the forums rules before posting. For most forums, this will mean no name calling or behaviour that brings offence to the members. Bascially you treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.

3) Please check with the webmaster of the forum if you wish to advertise on the forum. If you go in straight away and do not offer valuable information in order to build a relationship with those members, I could guarantee that you will be banned from the forum.

4) If they have a gallery showing Westie pictures, try and get an unusual or funny photo to upload and cobine this with a great caption. Members will appreciate this and you will be remembered.

West Highland white terriers are known have a spirited personality, are intelligent and sometimes a brilliant white coat. ( I speak about ours for the latest point, because he never seems to be clean. Always appears to be looking for the dirtiest spot).

They thrive on lots of attention as most dogs do and love walks. Our Westie loves to play soccer, but cheats by holding unto the ball. His other joy is a squeaky toy.

I recommend that you join a community of Westie lovers through a good forum. If you keep in mind the above points you will have a great experience and most likely make lifelong friends.
